John, our Government is running a strong economy, keeping the books in good shape and tackling long term problems in New Zealand.
One of those long term problems is homelessness.
It’s no secret that we inherited a housing crisis in 2017. After years of neglect under National, homelessness rates were shameful, with people sleeping in cars, garages and out on the streets. National refused to acknowledge there was a crisis - and even made matters worse by selling off thousands of state houses.
Since taking office, we’ve started to turn this around. We’ve stopped the state house sell-off, and built thousands of new state houses.
And last week, we announced our next steps to help get more Kiwis into homes. These include delivering 1000 new transitional housing places by the end of the year, and providing more budgeting, mental health and addiction support, to prevent people from becoming homeless in the first place.
We know we won’t solve homelessness overnight, but we’re taking on the challenge, and we’re making good progress.
Worryingly, on Sunday, Simon Bridges criticised the action this Government is taking to address homelessness. We’ve seen where that dismissive attitude to a serious crisis gets us - we can’t afford to go back.
