When Social Security was signed into law on this day in 1935, it lifted millions of seniors out of poverty and provided the backbone of the American dream. And for decades it was unimaginable that either political party would try to end the Social Security system. But that is what MAGA extremists are trying to do.
And here is the truth about Social Security: changes to Social Security affect rural communities more than urban communities.
Folks who are self-employed or work for small companies are less likely to have employer-sponsored retirement plans and are more likely to rely on Social Security.
Plus, many rural workers engage in jobs that involve manual labor and are more likely to be injured. Workers who experience severe injuries often rely on disability payments from Social Security.
And to top it all off, rural communities are aging and are seeing a larger share of their income coming from Social Security payments.
MAGA extremists threatened Social Security during the debt ceiling fight, and they'll do it again in the fall after they cause a government shutdown.
And just as with most of their stunts, working families will pay the price.
Americans pay into Social Security for our entire working life, and earn this benefit with our years of hard work. So we need to protect that investment from the corporate-driven extremists who just want bigger corporate tax breaks.
Remember: rural Democrats were key to passing the Social Security Act in 1935, and they will be just as important in protecting Social Security today.
