Dear John,

Overwhelmed is an understatement for how I’ve been feeling lately. Being prepared as a family caregiver feels impossible – you have to be ready for anything . But one small thing that I’ve found that helps is having a will and end of life plan for myself and my loved ones.

When my grandmother passed away recently, she had a will that had her end of life plans. It was a big relief – my family and I could make more space for our grief and focus on honoring her memory without worrying about legal documents.

For Make-A-Will month this August, take some time to set up a will for you and your loved ones – for free thanks to our partnership with FreeWill. It only takes 20 minutes. [[link removed]]

The opportunity to update or create a new will is one that should be seized by everyone – to help grant us and our loved ones some peace of mind and make sure everyone is cared for, no matter what happens.

Today, I’m pledging to have a conversation with my mother about her will. Her health has continued to deteriorate in the last few years as I’ve been caring for her. We’re facing the prospect of her remaining on disability indefinitely. But she hasn’t updated her will since I was young, and the old will just won’t work for our family today.

For me, helping my mother create a will and plan for end of life is about creating stability and setting expectations for both of us. It’s about making sure that her legacy and her wishes are executed fully as intended.

And I’m not forgetting the importance of setting up my own will either. Now that I’m a married homeowner, having a will in place will help protect my partner and my mother should anything happen to me.

In honor of Make-A-Will month, you can take just 20 minutes to set up a will for free through FreeWill. [[link removed]]

For those of you who are caregiving and receive care, know that you’re not alone. We’ll continue sending resources to help make your lives a little easier.

With care,
