Hi John, it’s Aaron Stephens, Senior Legislative Strategist with PCCC. I was 21 years old when I was elected to the city council in East Lansing, Michigan. At 24, I became mayor and led my city through the pandemic and the fallout from George Floyd’s murder -- one of the toughest years in our history.
When I ran for office I was told I was too young, just like my friend David Hogg when he co-founded March For Our Lives.
But young people have no choice. Our generation faces massive challenges.
Along with my work at the PCCC, I will be advising Leaders We Deserve -- the new PAC dedicated to electing young people started by David Hogg and Congressman Maxwell Frost’s Campaign Manager Kevin Lata.
My generation doesn’t have time to "sit down and shut up."
My generation doesn’t have time to continue decades-long fake debates that are really just carefully orchestrated delay tactics so giant corporations can continue to rake in billions.
Issues from gun violence, to climate change, to housing, to the exploitation of workers, to basic civil and human rights, to our very democracy should have been dealt with decisively years ago. We need action and we need leaders with the urgency to act NOW.

When David Hogg emailed PCCC members last week about Leaders We Deserve, he made the point that despite making up 45% of the electorate, Gen Z and Millenials only hold 21% of State Legislature seats.
Republicans have spent hundreds of millions of dollars winning state and local races. That has led directly to the all out assault on our rights and freedoms -- from abortion bans to taking away LGBTQ+ rights to repealing life-saving common sense gun laws.
To fight back, Leaders We Deserve will invest in young people, knock down barriers, and elect more young candidates to office. Here’s how:
Recruitment: Identifying candidates who will have the biggest impact on their states (that's where the real work is happening).
Providing Day-to-Day Support: We’re helping campaigns build from the ground up and will work with them directly on fundraising, messaging, coalition building, voter contact, and volunteer recruitment.
Volunteer Network: Our grassroots volunteer army (that’s you, John) will have person-to-person conversations with voters all across a candidate’s district, advocating on their behalf.
Running Paid Media Campaigns: We’ll run well-funded independent expenditure programs.
There’s a reason our political system favors those who are older, wealthier, and white -- running for office takes serious resources.
Young candidates are often not seen as viable. They often struggle to raise money. They have lower personal wealth and smaller donor networks. When they do run, they often get crushed in primaries by wealthy men with big connections and tons of institutional support.
Thanks for being a bold progressive.
