Redistricting is right around the corner, and the first, most important step to redistricting is the 2020 Census!
What's the Census?
The count is mandated by the Constitution and conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau, a nonpartisan government agency. The 2020 Census counts the population in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and five U.S. territories.
Why should I participate?
This critical process ensures that Colorado receives fair representation in Congress and its fair share of federal funding. There is approximately $880 billion in federal funding allocated across the United States based on Census counts. In Colorado, this equates to approximately $13 billion annually or an estimated $2,300 per person according to a study by George Washington University. Some of the programs funded by Census dollars are Head Start programs; section 8 housing; Tier 1 grants for educational agencies and emergency food and shelter.
Are my answers safe?
The Census is safe and important; the answers are protected by law and are not shared with anyone pursuant to federal law, to include any other Federal Agency.
How do I participate?
By April 1, 2020, every home will receive an invitation to participate in the 2020 Census. You will have three options for responding:
- Online.
- By phone.
- By mail.
In mid-March, households will begin receiving official Census Bureau mail with detailed information on how to respond to the 2020 Census.

OUR KEYNOTE SPEAKER FOR THE 3RD ANNUAL OBAMA DINNER:
Congressman Hakeem Jeffries!
|
ICYMI: Congressman Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) has graciously accepted our invitation to be the keynote speaker for the 3rd Annual Obama Dinner!
The Chair of the House Democratic Caucus, Jeffries, who has represented parts of New York City since 2013, sits on the House Judiciary Committee, and was also one of the House impeachment managers alongside Colorado's own Representative Jason Crow!
Congressman Jeffries is an attorney who received his JD from New York University. He is married to Kennisandra Arciniegas-Jeffries, and they have two kids.
Congressman Jeffries made headlines when, during a speech he gave before the Senate on day two of the impeachment trial, he quoted deceased rapper Biggie Smalls, who also hailed from Brooklyn:
“We are here, sir, to follow the facts, apply the law, be guided by the Constitution, and present the truth to the American people. That is why we are here, Mr. Sekulow, and if you don’t know, now you know.”

Meet Bruce, one of our bright and smiling volunteers who greets folks at the front desk on Thursdays! Bruce has been volunteering with us for a while, and we took a few minutes to catch up with him on why he volunteers for the Colorado Dems, and why he thinks others should too!
|
Why do you volunteer?
Because I believe there’s hope for the Democratic Party and I believe it’s the people who will make that hope a reality. The reason I volunteer for the Colorado Democratic Party is because the CDP reaches out to beyond the front range, to all of Colorado.
|
What would you say to someone who wants to volunteer, but hasn't taken that first step?
I would encourage you to volunteer at whatever level you’d like to get involved! Candidates need help, and volunteering also allows you to learn more about politics. It’s not dull and boring — it’s a great learning experience! The grassroots have been drying up for years, and volunteering is the way to replenish it!

Do you want to volunteer? Reach out to our volunteer coordinator Karin Asensio at [email protected], and see how YOU CAN GET INVOLVED!

Senator Bennet Holds Town Halls

Sen. Michael Bennet, D-Colo., speaks at a town hall in Littleton on Feb. 18, 2020.
|
CPR News: Back In Colorado, Bennet Talks Presidential, Senate Races At Littleton Town Hall
February 19, 2020
"Fresh off ending his presidential campaign, Sen. Michael Bennet is still not backing any Democratic presidential candidate over the others in the party's bid to take the presidency from President Donald Trump. But, Bennet says he thinks it's possible to flip the balance of political power in the Senate in November to Democrats — and that includes unseating his colleague Sen. Cory Gardner.
"Bennet answered questions about the 2020 election, the state of the U.S. Senate and other top-of-mind issues for voters in Littleton during a town hall on Tuesday night.
"Attendees like Greg Reizian of Evergreen wanted to know more about what Bennet learned during his run for the Democratic nomination for president and which of the candidates he will support in the primary.
"'I think he had every right and reason to do that and I think the Democrats needed to essentially be open to this flood of potential candidates that would throw their hat in the ring,' Reizian said. 'The primary issue of concern for me (is) defeating Trump and [Sen.] Cory Gardner in November since we have a chance to do that and change the balance of power in the Senate.'

Colorado's Jason Crow plans to hold town hall in Aurora on Monday
By Colorado Politics
"U.S. Rep. Jason Crow plans to hold a town hall meeting in Aurora on Monday, giving the freshman Democrat a chance to talk with constituents about a busy past couple of months, including Crow's turn in the national spotlight prosecuting President Donald Trump's impeachment.
"'From helping secure a $25 million infrastructure grant for our community to passing vital legislation on lowering the cost of prescription drugs, it’s been a busy few months,' Crow said in a statement. 'I’m looking forward to giving you an update on those projects and more as well as discussing the issues most important to you at Monday’s town hall.'
"It will be Crow's first town hall since he served as one of the House impeachment managers, arguing the case against Trump in a Senate trial that ended in the president's acquittal."

Cory Gardner, Jobs And Space Force: Trump Sells The Promise Of 4 More Years In Colorado Springs
From Colorado Public Radio
"President Donald Trump riffed for more than an hour to a near-capacity crowd in Colorado Springs on Thursday night.
"Between sweeping tributes to American greatness, sinister warnings and teases about the Space Command — along with complaints about fake news and the Oscars — the president showered praise on Sen. Cory Gardner, the Yuma Republican.
"'We are going to win Colorado in a landslide. And you’re going to help us get Cory Gardner across that line, because he’s been with us 100 percent,' Trump said. 'There was no waiver. We appreciate it. Thank you, Cory. Thank you.'
"It was just the first of several times in the speech that the president praised Gardner and urged the crowd to support his reelection. Later, he described the freshman senator as 'rock solid.'
...
"He needs strong support from state GOP voters to have any hope of holding his seat. But Democratic groups hope his alliance with the president will drive away moderates, and they plan to emphasize their ties at every opportunity.
"'What we heard tonight was exactly what we expected — lies and misleading statements from both Donald Trump and Cory Gardner intended to save their floundering political careers,' said Colorado Democratic Party Chair Morgan Carroll in a statement. 'Gardner has been a loud cheerleader for Trump as he’s degraded the Constitution and undermined Coloradans’ health care, and Colorado will show Trump and Gardner the door this November.'"

Morgan Carroll: All the lies Trump will tell Coloradans when he comes to town
From the Denver Post
"Colorado is getting a visit from President Donald Trump for a campaign rally Thursday, and word is that Sen. Cory Gardner will be eagerly standing alongside him on stage. While both men are more unpopular here than not, we know Trump and his enabler Gardner will be saying a lot of blatantly false and misleading things to salvage their political careers. If you plan on tuning in or attending the rally, we recommend keeping some points in mind about both Trump and Gardner as they attempt some revisionist history Thursday night in Colorado Springs.
"Colorado has been a leader in increasing access to quality and affordable health care. Under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), Colorado’s uninsured rate has plummeted to 6.5%, and over 700,000 Coloradans with pre-existing conditions are protected from being denied coverage. Democrats in the state capitol passed historic bills to save Coloradans money on health care, such as reinsurance to lower premiums by as much as 20.2%, a first-in-the-nation $100 monthly cap on insulin, and a policy to lower prescription drug costs.
"Meanwhile, Trump’s promises of lowering health care costs are as flimsy as his promise that Mexico would pay for his medieval wall. Whether it’s his numerous attempts to sabotage the ACA, going to court to destroy the ACA entirely (which could cost hundreds of thousands of Coloradans their coverage), or his budget that cuts billions of dollars from Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security, Trump has taken nearly every step possible to undermine Coloradans’ health insurance — all with no plan to replace the ACA if it goes away. If you were looking for Cory Gardner, you could find him voting for every ACA repeal attempt, supporting Trump’s lawsuit to destroy the ACA, or looking for another elevator to duck questions from reporters."

Who’s the money behind Scott Tipton?
From the Journal
"For example, according to the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics, Rep. Scott Tipton received nearly a third of his last election funding, a whopping $463,000, from the banking, finance and real estate industries. He also received a substantial amount from the oil and gas industries. Less than 5% of Tipton’s money came from small donors.
"Since there is oil and gas to be extracted from public lands in his district, that industry’s desire to influence Tipton is understandable, but banking? Why are the likes of Bank of America, Charles Schwab and the North Carolina conglomerate Truist Financial pouring money into the campaign of a low-profile congressman from rural Colorado?
"The answer is that he sits on the House Banking Committee. This means he can vote to pass bills the banks want passed (which he has) and vote against the bills they don’t."

Letters: Buck’s over-the-top statement
From the Denver Post
"I see that Rep. Ken Buck is again at the business of making outrageous and completely fact-free, political statements. In this recent episode, we find Buck advancing the ridiculous notion that Congress could begin an impeachment investigation of former Vice President Joe Biden, even though the man currently holds no elected office.
"Really? While absurd on its surface, the statement is made worse by Buck’s failure to cite any specific crimes that Biden might have committed, ostensibly as part of his work in Ukraine."

"What's the High Fivers Club", you ask? It started with a simple idea: There are nearly 1.2 million registered Democrats in Colorado -- what if every single one of them gave just $5 a month to the Colorado Democratic Party (CDP)?
Answer: The CDP would be the best-funded state party in the country -- with zero dollars from corporate PACs and plenty for flipping red seats to blue!
If you haven't given to the CDP yet, here are a few simple reasons why we're asking you today:
- The CDP is the central base that helps recruit volunteers, train candidates, and assist county parties win elections. While the Democratic National Committee provides some limited funds, the reality is it is up to us to raise our own money so we can support Democratic candidates running for office in Colorado.
- We knock on doors and meet with voters to talk about voting Democratic even before we know who our nominees are! As part of the High Fivers Club, you can help us get supplies for volunteers so we can knock on 50,000 more doors before we know our nominee.
- Once we have our nominee, we'll use what we've learned about voters to help them jump-start their Get Out the Voter efforts and stay toe-to-toe with Donald Trump and the Republicans.
