““Planned Parenthood and others want to use public Title X funds to support their abortion services in blatant disregard of the fact that Congress explicitly and statutorily excluded abortion from the scope of Title X projects and funding." —Catherine Glenn Foster, President & CEO at Americans United for Life

New Laws Deepen State Differences Over Abortion ([link removed][UNIQID])
(Pew-Stateline) Anti-abortion advocates also maintain that the bans have had a practical effect. According to Clarke Forsythe, senior counsel for the anti-abortion organization Americans United for Life, the new laws have garnered media attention that has had a “salutary” effect by educating the public. Besides sweeping affirmations of women’s reproductive health rights, a few blue states enacted measures this year that will have an immediate effect on women seeking an abortion, making access easier and more affordable. Only one notable anti-abortion law that may have an immediate effect on women passed this year, extending a waiting period for abortion in Arkansas. That’s far fewer than in the past few years, in part because of a 2015 Supreme Court finding in Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt that certain restrictions on abortion facilities represent an “undue burden” for women seeking an abortion.
Pulling back the curtain: The great and powerful Oz? Big media help pro-abortion executives seem much larger than life ([link removed][UNIQID])
(World Magazine) National and regional pro-life groups have long heard activists meld abortion and women’s professional success. Attorney Katie Glenn of Americans United for Life (AUL) said this misconception stems from a tendency to “define equality on men’s terms.” As she explained, fatherhood rarely interrupts a man’s career, and abortion purportedly gives that freedom to women. Glenn criticizes this perspective: “If we’re talking about choice, what about the choice to have a family?” She said the “Don’t Ban Equality” ad shows abortions, rather than being helpful to women, are “a benefit for employers who find employees with families inconvenient.”
New Study Indicates ‘Medication Abortion’ Is Potentially Psychologically And Biologically Damaging ([link removed][UNIQID])
(Townhall) The three-year study was led by neuroscientist Dr. Stephen Sammut of Franciscan University and essentially makes the case that the biological and behavioral consequences of abortion occur even when a woman ends her pregnancy via medication. In fact, Sammut’s study indicated that abortion-inducing drugs mifepristone and misoprostol led to side effects such as depression, loss of appetite, anxiety, and decreased self-care. “Our study clearly indicates that there are negative consequences to terminating a viable pregnancy using mifepristone and misoprostol,” Sammut told TownHall. “This was evident in the overall negative effects on the well-being of the animals [in the study who were] administered the drugs to terminate pregnancy. These animals also displayed depression and anxiety-like behaviors.”
Democratic Party can be pro-life, too ([link removed][UNIQID])
(The Detroit News) One of the best-kept secrets in American politics is that many Democrats — some surveys suggest as many as one in three — identify as pro-life. There's even a national organization of pro-life Democrats, I'm a member, and we're holding this year's national conference right here in Michigan this weekend. Many Democrats, including most party leaders, don't seem to realize that pro-life principles are at the heart of what it means to be a Democrat. And many members of the Party of Trump believe, mistakenly, that theirs is the pro-life party. Let's try to clear up the confusion.\
New Jersey assisted suicide law to go into effect this week ([link removed][UNIQID])
(Fox News) A New Jersey law which will allow terminally ill patients to legally end their lives will go into effect on Thursday in the state. The Aid in Dying for the Terminally Ill Act permits adult patients with six months or less to live to obtain and self-administer life-ending medication. Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy signed the bill into law on April 12 after the Democrat-led Assembly and Senate passed the measure in close votes.
Trump’s New Abortion Rules Could Hit Rural Communities Hardest. Just Look At Maine. ([link removed][UNIQID])
(Vice News) “Planned Parenthood and others want to use public Title X funds to support their abortion services in blatant disregard of the fact that Congress explicitly and statutorily excluded abortion from the scope of Title X projects and funding,” Catherine Glenn Foster, president of the powerful anti-abortion group Americans United for Life, said in a statement.
HHS Issues Proposed Rule to Revise ACA Section 1557 Regulations ([link removed][UNIQID])
(The Federalist Society) The 2016 regulation’s redefinition of “sex” was preliminarily enjoined nationwide by two federal district court judges. Since then, HHS under the Trump Administration has returned to its longstanding position that the term “sex” refers solely to biological sex. As such, HHS is proposing to revise the 2016 regulation’s provisions that are preliminarily enjoined to better comply with the mandates of Congress and address the legal concerns raised by the courts. Under the proposed rule, HHS would continue to vigorously enforce civil rights in healthcare, but add explicit regulatory language that Section 1557 shall be enforced consistent with the ACA’s healthcare conscience protections (Sections 1303 and 1553, concerning abortion and legalized suicide, respectively) and existing constitutional provisions and federal laws that protect religious freedom and conscience rights, such as the First Amendment to the Constitution, the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, the Church
Amendments, the Coats-Snowe Amendment, the Weldon Amendment, the Hyde Amendment, and the Helms Amendment.
