John,
Election Day is less than 10 months away. Our campaign is growing stronger each day, and I wanted to give you an update.
Earlier this month, we welcomed our volunteers back to the campaign office for an energetic day of volunteer activities and reunions. It was great to see so many familiar faces and to reconnect with volunteers from across the district. One of the amazing things about our 2018 campaign was how our supporters found community in our office. Folks across the district became friends while writing postcards, making calls, and knocking doors in 2018 and have continued their friendships through advocacy in 2019. Our grassroots efforts will be at the heart of our campaign again in 2020.
Another exciting development: our campaign team is growing! You’ve probably heard from one or more of our newest team members and we’re incredibly proud to have such great talent joining us. My team works incredibly hard to make sure our message is getting out to everyone, and I am excited that Team Spanberger is growing so quickly.
And while I have the utmost confidence in the campaign we’re building, we can see some big challenges ahead. National Republican groups have already spent nearly a million dollars against my campaign, making this one of the most sizeable investments from Republicans to date. Super PACs have promised to invest more in VA-07 than they ever have before.
At the moment, our campaign is facing eight Republican challengers – each more conservative than the next and each convinced they can defeat me.
This campaign will certainly be more challenging than our first. In 2016, Donald Trump won with 7% of the vote. Now, in 2020, with Trump back on the ticket and enormous sums of national money flooding the district, we will have to run a near-perfect campaign. But I love a good challenge.
In 2018, Democrats took control of the House of Representatives for the first time in a decade because we flipped seats like this one in Virginia. In the time since then, we’ve passed meaningful legislation that will have a strong, positive impact on the lives of Central Virginians and Americans from all walks of life.
We’ve passed legislation to reduce prescription drug costs, to help veterans, to combat gun violence, to increase transparency in our elections and clean up corruption – just to name a few. We need to keep this momentum going if we want to truly make a difference.
John, with so much on the line in such a competitive race, can I ask you to consider a contribution today?
