Kevin McCarthy can’t seem to come up with a reasonable plan for anything. His latest gimmick? Deciding that the GOP’s solution for imminent climate change is to plant one trillion trees.

That’s right, instead of cutting emissions or using renewable energy, Speaker McCarthy and his Fossil Fools want to use trees to offset use of fossil fuels, but research shows that this is the least efficient way to combat climate change. This plan would only prevent 0.15 degrees Celsius of warming by 2100, when we’re currently on the path to warm by over 2.0 degrees Celsius.

Still, the GOP chair of the House Natural Resources Committee has introduced legislation to plant a trillion trees, which he describes as “a comprehensive, practical solution to the climate issues we’re facing today.” SEEC knows that this plan is in no way practical, and our members are working on actual actionable steps to fight imminent climate change. Will you join us in our work to take immediate action against global warming?

Don’t get us wrong, we love trees. But we can’t be fooled into thinking this plan would come anywhere close to achieving our climate goals.

Meanwhile, don’t forget that if the GOP takes a trifecta or even just holds on to their House majority in 2024, they have a plan ready to go on Day One to roll back everything President Biden and SEEC has done to make us a cleaner country and fight climate change. We need to work together to re-elect all of our SEEC members and bring new team members into Congress so we can make sure all of our efforts aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. McCarthy and his Republicans are full of ridiculous ideas, but we can’t forget that those ideas are dangerous for our country and our future. We need you, John, to join us in the fight to keep the country on the right track when it comes to fighting climate change.
