This month marks the anniversary of the Voting Rights Act (VRA), and while we celebrate this historic piece of legislation, it’s hard to do so without acknowledging systemic efforts to undermine the VRA and make it harder for people to vote.
Since 2020, we’ve seen election denial take hold and dozens of restrictive voting laws enacted. We’ve seen states make it harder for people to vote, clear the way for political interference in our elections, and further gerrymander maps. In Alabama, lawmakers have defied the U.S. Supreme Court’s order to honor a key provision of the VRA and draw new maps that give Black Alabamians fairer representation.
Extremists have become even more emboldened to undermine our democratic process. In fact, House Republicans are taking voter suppression to the national level. They voted to advance a bill that would encourage states to enact even more voting restrictions.
As always, I’m fighting back. I’m proud to be an original co-sponsor of the Freedom to Vote Act , which Democrats recently reintroduced and which, if enacted, would combat voter suppression; expand automatic, same-day registration and early voting; and strengthen voting by mail.
I had the great privilege of serving in Congress with one of the greatest citizens our country has ever known, Congressman John Lewis. In a beautiful letter he wrote to us all shortly before his death, he reminded us that democracy is not a state, it is an act. And he reminded us that we must take action:

It is time for us to use our votes to protect the rights of others to cast theirs and to engage people across our country to exercise this precious right.
