John,
Today, I announced that Labour will remove GST from fruit and vegetables and take further action to make everyday life more affordable for working families, as part of the 10-point Cost of Living Plan Labour will take into this year’s election.
By removing GST from fruit and vegetables from 1 April next year, families will save around $20 a month.
The price of fresh produce has been particularly high recently, in part because the weather has wreaked havoc on supply chains and impacted our growers. But food is always a big cost for families - so this is a good policy for today and the future.
A re-elected Labour Government will make the largest ever increase to the Working for Families In-Work Tax Credit, that will see around 160,000 families $25 a week better off. This increased support comes at a time when New Zealand families need it most, and it builds on measures that we’ve already put in place to help household budgets stretch a bit further.
We will also lift the Working for Families abatement threshold by more than $5,000 to $50,000 from 1 April 2026, to ensure working families keep more when their pay increases or they pick up extra hours.
Under my leadership, Labour has put the cost of living front and centre. That’s because it’s the biggest issue facing New Zealanders right now, and also because I want families to have the right support to get on with lives and get ahead.
Our cost of living package includes free doctor’s prescriptions, 20 hours free ECE for two year olds, free or half price public transport for children and young people – and now GST off fruit and vegetables and a $25 boost to Working for Families – and there’s more to come.
New Zealanders have a clear choice this election. Tax cuts for millionaires under National, or support that will make a meaningful difference for families under Labour.
My message to New Zealanders over the coming months is simple. I understand your concerns and I’m on your side.
Thanks,
Chris
