Every captive elephant has a story. For almost every elephant held captive in US zoos, their story remains untold. We’re going to change that–and we’re going to end elephant captivity in US zoos.

Today, World Elephant Day, we’re excited to give you a preview of our plans for a new national campaign that will educate millions of people about the extraordinary cognitive, emotional, and social complexity of elephants, how they suffer in even the “best” zoo, and why they need the right to liberty.
The more people who understand the awe-inspiring capacities of elephants, the more people we’ll have on our side. The more people we have on our side, the more likely it is that judges and lawmakers are forced to pay attention and create change.
Centered on an interactive, information-rich online portal that will be the first of its kind for elephants, the Free To Be Elephants Campaign will shine a bright light on every zoo exhibit in the US–not only telling every elephant’s story, but also showing which zoos are engaging in practices that are perpetuating this cruel, archaic system, like captive breeding and the international elephant trade. It will also give elephant advocates everything they need to call on AZA-accredited zoos to end their elephant programs and help elephants across the US find sanctuary.
We’ll launch the first phase of the Free To Be Elephants Campaign in September. The more funds we raise now, the more elephants we can help and the more people we can reach. Help make every day an opportunity to help protect the lives and freedom of elephants by donating to the NhRP today. Will you chip in to meet our $30,000 goal by midnight tonight? |
Inarguably, the story of every zoo elephant is a story of tremendous loss. With your financial support for this unique education campaign, the next chapter in these elephants’ lives can be about how people across the country came together to restore elephants’ peace, dignity, and freedom at the same time as we continue to push courts and legislatures to recognize elephants’ right to liberty. Thank you from everyone at the NhRP! |
