This International Youth Day, UNICEF is celebrating the tireless work and vision of young leaders around the world. As you read this, young people are up against unimaginable obstacles, from rising extreme poverty and displacement to more frequent natural disasters and humanitarian emergencies. Despite these challenges, children are channeling their bravery and brilliance to protect our planet — and UNICEF is proud to amplify their actions.

Check out three young leaders who inspire us:

Malsa is a leader in her group of “coral kids,” who snorkel down to coral reefs in the Maldives to monitor growth and protect them from damage. The ecosystem is severely under threat due to climate change.

Tahsin is an activist who founded a youth organization in Bangladesh, one of the most vulnerable countries to climate change. He works to reduce single-use plastics, promote eco-friendly transportation and empower others to take climate action.

Béatrice joined the Green Girls initiative to learn how to manufacture a cheaper, more environmentally friendly form of charcoal for household cooking in her community in Burundi, preventing deforestation.

Every day, and especially today, we’re amazed by young people’s dedication to speaking up and improving the lives of others in their communities. UNICEF is continuing to work towards a world where every young person — and every child — can grow and thrive.
