It's World Elephant Day - so what better day to shine a light on zoos, and the horrendous imprisonment of thousands of animals across the UK purely for human entertainment, than today?

Why World Elephant Day?

Elephants are undeniably unsuitable for captivity. We know that no animal is suitable of course, but elephants, with their iconic size and gentle nature, often display very visible signs of trauma from their forced imprisonment. Anyone who visits a zoo will have seen the abnormal behaviours - such as head bobbing and swaying from side to side - and find it impossible to deny the suffering they have witnessed.

We have to bring this reality to the forefront of people’s minds. There are many hidden horrors behind the con-servation lie, and we are here to tell the truth of captivity. With your help we can do this.

Anne has suffered terrible cruelty throughout her life; starting when she was stolen from the wild. She then spent 55 years being forced to perform in a UK circus and was only ‘given up’ when footage emerged of her being beaten whilst chained.
Sadly her suffering didn’t end there, as she is now held captive in solitary confinement at Longleat Safari Park, and hasn’t seen another elephant for over 20 long years!

Of course, it isn’t just elephants who suffer in zoos. ALL animals suffer in captivity. Big cats can spend hours every day pacing their small enclosures, and polar bears are often seen pacing relentlessly or swimming in circles, unable to escape. Smaller animals also suffer greatly in zoos including birds and reptiles - the list is endless.
What you can do for animals currently held in zoos…

Please, join us in celebrating elephants and all their magnificentness, and help them by taking part in our online actions against their imprisonment in zoos.

Our first action is calling for the government to finally commit to a ban on the keeping of elephants in zoos. This would be a monumental step forward in the phasing out of zoos, and for the freedom of animals held captive in them.

Our second action is calling for more transparency in zoos. Our 'No More Zoo Secrets' campaign is vital, as we must ensure zoos become more transparent and hold them accountable for the deaths of the many animals they imprison.
