Last week, First Lady Suzanne Youngkin joined Governor Glenn Youngkin at the 98th annual Chincoteague Volunteer Fireman’s Carnival for the signing of HB 1951 and SB 1478, designating the Chincoteague Pony as the Official State Pony of the Commonwealth of Virginia. The First Lady accompanied the legendary Chincoteague Saltwater Cowboys on horseback for the decades-old “pony swim back” that returns the ponies to their natural habitat. This event raises funds for the first responders and offers visitors a peek into Virginia’s vast equine industry and treasured wildlife. While in Chincoteague, the Governor and First Lady also stopped in at Island Creamery— recently named the Best Ice Cream Shop in America by USA Today. Run by three generations of the Conklin family, this stand-out has served up unique, freshly churned flavors since 1975. “Marsh Mud,” a rich dark chocolate ice cream referencing the island wetlands, was a personal favorite! |

Just 11 days before his assassination, and during the final push to end the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln visited Petersburg on April 3rd, 1865. The next day he visited Richmond, where over 800 buildings were burned just days before by Confederate troops before they fled the city. On loan from Hampton University, artist A.B. Jackson's "Portrait of Abraham Lincoln" hangs on display in the Executive Mansion as part of the first installment of the Art Experience. Only TWO more opportunities remain to see the current exhibit, 'The Spirit of Virginia'! Plan your trip to the Mansion today by visiting the Executive Mansion website. The final tour offerings for the Spirit of Virginia Art Experience Installment are Tuesday, August 15th, and Friday, August 18th, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. |
