Letter from the Mayor

Dear Washingtonians,

We're just a few weeks away from the first day of school, and we know that for our young people, a strong and successful school year begins on day one. We have thousands of students who will be returning to school, ready to learn and grow, to reconnect with old friends and make new ones, and ready to make themselves and our city proud. And we can't wait to support them.

One way to ensure a strong start to the new school year is to plan ahead:

* Have a plan for getting to and from school and school-related activities [ [link removed] ] — every day, on time. Remember that students with strong attendance not only do better academically, they also have better social-emotional outcomes.
* Make sure you have completed enrollment forms for the upcoming school year. DCPS families can go to enrolldcps.dc.gov [ [link removed] ] for enrollment information and guidance.
* If your child still needs required immunizations [ [link removed] ], check out this DC Health calendar [ [link removed] ] and make a plan to go to an immunization clinic.
* DCPS families should save the calendar of important dates that can be found HERE [ [link removed] ].
* Make a plan for what your child or teen will be doing after school. If you need help finding an activity for your child, the Office of Out of School Time is hosting an "Afterschool in the City" event at Turkey Thicket Rec Center on Saturday, September 9 [ [link removed] ]. Families and caregivers can learn about available programs for youth ages 5 to 21.

And in all our preparations, let's remember to have fun and make sure our young people are excited about the new school year. We have fantastic educators in our schools who love and support our kids, and they are ready to welcome students back on day one.

Let's prepare for a fantastic school year, DC.

Sincerely,

Muriel Bowser

Chuck Brown Day at Fort DuPont Park
Chuck Brown Day

Join the Department of Parks and Recreation to celebrate Chuck Brown Day at a new, bigger location: Fort DuPont Park. The Chuck Brown Foundation will be giving out free backpacks for the kids.
