John,
All workers should be able to join a union — and hell yes, that includes
every single Starbucks barista.
This past weekend, I joined Starbucks Workers United out of Starbucks'
Seattle corporate headquarters to amplify and embolden the collective work
of the more than 8,500 workers at over 350 stores across 41 states who are
fighting to unionize.

These workers have been fighting for their right to organize free from the
union-busting tactics that Starbucks has been pushing for far too long.
While Starbucks claims to be a progressive company, they have consistently
refused any good-faith negotiations with SBWU. Meanwhile, the federal
government is currently processing more than 200 charges alleging over
1,300 violations — which would make Starbucks one of the worst violators
of labor law in modern U.S. history.^1
The right to work in a safe, secure, and respectful workplace, a living
wage, guaranteed hours, consistent scheduling, fairness in the workplace,
benefits and more cannot be limited to manufacturing jobs.
It's time for a change — and we are at the forefront of that change. Right
here in Washington state, a total of 28 Starbucks stores have filed for
union elections and of that number, 25 stores have held union elections,
22 voted to join with SBWU, and just two stores rejected the union.
This fight is bringing inspiration to workers all across the country.
Today and every day moving forward, I am honored to fight alongside the
hardworking people of Washington. Together we will fight to usher in a new
era of workers' rights and protections to ensure that everyone has the
resources they need to live a fulfilling and productive life.
In solidarity,
Pramila Jayapal
