Thank you to everyone who helped make our job fair a huge success! Irving, TX - Thank you to everyone who helped make the 2023 North Texas Job Fair a huge success! On Monday, more than 15,000 people joined us at the Irving Convention Center eager to meet 375+ employers! North Texas is BOOMING and employers need workers. With so many companies and people moving here, I’m so happy we were able to connect them with new opportunities to pursue the career of their dreams! We provided over 2,000 backpacks and school supply packs to North Texas families and connected hundreds of veterans to supportive services, including PACT Act experts from the VA -- more on the PACT Act below. On Tuesday, I joined my friends at the Dallas Regional Chamber for a Congressional forum alongside other North Texas members from both sides of the aisle! I appreciated the chance to discuss some of the issues we're working on to help our region, including energy issues, government spending, and aviation policy. On Wednesday, I toured the Baylor Scott & White hospital in Grapevine. They’ve made a huge impact on our North Texas community, helping save countless lives. During our meeting, I updated the hospital team on my work to improve our healthcare system and was glad to listen to their feedback and ideas. NOTICE: The deadline to apply for backdated benefits under the PACT Act has been EXTENDED to Monday, August 14th. You can file your PACT Act claim, or submit your intent to file on the VA's website: [link removed]. Texas-24 Work of the Week This week, we connected 375 employers with 15,000 people at the 2023 North Texas Job Fair! American Airlines, UT Southwestern, Boeing, and many others had lines all day with eager candidates. Our constituent services experts also explained PACT Act benefits and eligibility to hundreds of veterans and connected them to supportive resources. In addition, we provided over 2,000 backpacks and school supply kits to North Texas families! The room was cleared within 40 minutes. North Texas is booming and our workforce needs are significant. This year's job fair was a tremendous success and a testament to the hardworking nature of Texans. I'm proud of the bipartisan effort to provide such an extraordinary event for the people and businesses of North Texas. Texas-24 Hometown Hero Former Irving Police Chief Benny Newman passed away on Sunday, August 6 at the age of 91. He served as Irving's police chief from 1978 to 1994. Prior to joining Irving Police Department, he served in the National Guard Reserves and spent 23 years at Dallas Police Department. During his career with DPD, he received 16 commendations, was awarded the Certificate of Merit, and rose to the rank of Captain. As well as serving in law enforcement, he also played an instrumental role in creating the Irving Police Athletic League (PAL), which provides classes and camps to hundreds of youths each year in Irving and surrounding communities. As a leader in our community and a dedicated public servant, Chief Newman has left a lasting impact in North Texas, for which we are forever grateful. I would like to thank Chief Newman for everything he has done for our community, and I hope you’ll join me in praying for his family and friends.
