John,
While people flock to see the movie “Oppenheimer,” many don’t know about the toxic legacy of the atomic bomb in the United States.
Government mismanagement of radioactive waste from the Manhattan Project has led to dangerous contamination for generations of people, increasing their risk of cancer and other health problems. That waste still endangers communities around the country, including around St. Louis.
After a recent report found unsafe levels of radioactive waste in and around an elementary school in Rep. Cori Bush’s district, she introduced the Justice for Jana Elementary Act.
The bill would require clean-up and testing for radioactive contamination in the school district, and it would also create a fund for schools impacted by Manhattan Project waste to request financial assistance for radioactive testing or the construction of new schools.
