Democrat,
This week, we honored the extraordinary life of Lt. Governor, Sheila Oliver, with a three-day Celebration of Life that began in Trenton and will conclude in Essex County.
Yesterday, members of the public were invited to the New Jersey State House Rotunda where the Lt. Governor laid in state, escorted and accompanied by a rotating Honor Guard from the New Jersey State Police. Her casket was draped in an American flag and ferried in a gold hearse with the state seal on the front doors. Hundreds of state officials, state lawmakers, members of Congress, and local officials waited in line to pay their respects at the foot of the casket one by one-- including the Governor and First Lady, and members of the New Jersey Legislative Black Caucus, who each carried a red rose to place by the casket. A line of hundreds of people waited to get in to pay their respects to one of New Jersey’s most iconic and beloved change makers.

“Lt. Governor Oliver is a living testament to the importance of having Black women in positions of power to represent the needs and values of our community,” said Rev. Al Sharpton. [[link removed]] “Lt. Governor Oliver fought to ensure more women — and more Black women in particular — have the opportunity to serve in elected office. Not satisfied with her own success, she paved the way for a new generation as well.”
State flags will also fly at half-staff for a month in honor of one of New Jersey's most accomplished and devoted public servants.
