I emailed you earlier this week about how the Federal Election Commission (FEC) would be voting on whether to move forward with Public Citizen’s formal petition urging the agency to ban AI-generated deepfakes in political ads.
Well, the FEC agreed to move our petition forward!
This is a big step toward protecting our elections from the severe threat of deepfakes being used by federal candidates and political parties to confuse or mislead voters.
But it is only a preliminary step.
- The FEC’s decision to move our petition to the next step in the process does NOT mean that the agency will ultimately take action to ban deepfakes.
- It only means that our petition enters a public comment period.
- So now we *really* need to ramp up pressure on the FEC and show the agency that the American people are counting on it to protect our democracy from the threat of deepfakes.
Take the next step and tell the Federal Election Commission to actually ban the use of deepfakes by federal candidates and political parties.

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you took action earlier this week, please take action again. The first time was just to convince the FEC to consider our petition at all. Now we need the FEC to hear from as many Americans as possible to actually take the crucial and obvious step of banning deepfakes.
Thanks for taking action (again).
For democracy,
- Robert Weissman, President of Public Citizen
