Constitutional amendment to provide state right to abortion will be on November 2023 ballot in Ohio

|
|
Ohio voters will decide a citizen-initiated constitutional amendment on abortion and other reproductive decisions on Nov. 7, 2023.
The Ohio amendment is the first and only statewide abortion measure certified for the ballot this year. Two more—in Maryland and New York—are currently set for 2024. Similar amendments have been proposed in Florida, Missouri, and South Dakota and may appear on the 2024 ballot.

Ohio voters defeat Issue 1

|
|
|
|
On Tuesday, Ohio voters defeated Issue 1, an amendment that would have increased the vote requirement to approve future state constitutional amendments from a simple majority to 60%. With 95% of the vote in, election results showed the amendment losing 57%-43%.
As a result, the Ohio Right to Make Reproductive Decisions Including Abortion Initiative on the Nov. 7 ballot (and future measures) will be decided by a simple majority requirement.

Last week, 146 candidates filed to run for congressional and state offices—including for elections in 2023, 2024, 2025, and 2026.
That’s up 24 from the preceding week. Since the start of the year, we’ve tracked an average of 86 candidate filings per week.
