John,
A little more than ten years ago, I had the pleasure of visiting the beautiful state of Hawaii with my friends and colleagues, Hawaii Senators Mazie Hirono and Brian Schatz. It is almost difficult to describe a place like Hawaii and its extraordinary mix of culture, history, and natural wonders.
Today, my heart is with all the people of Hawaii as wildfires tear through the state, displacing families, burning homes and businesses, and claiming the lives of at least 55 people so far. I know that I am joined in grief with people all over Illinois, the U.S., and across the world—and I am already proud to see the ways that folks are stepping up to support our Hawaiian friends.
If you want to help Hawaii respond to and recover from these wildfires, please consider making a donation directly to the Hawaii Community Foundation’s Maui Strong Fund. [link removed]
According to the Hawaii Community Foundation, the Maui Strong Fund was created to help Maui residents prepare for and recover from disasters. The funds are currently allocated to support the Maui communities that have been directly impacted by the destructive wildfires.
Time and again, our grassroots team has put politics aside and shown our compassion and empathy for communities in need, whether they are close to home or as far away as Ukraine. Now, I know that we can join together and provide a powerful outpouring of support for Hawaii.
Please—donate what you can to the Hawaii Community Foundation’s Maui Strong Fund. [link removed]
My best,
Dick Durbin
