John, it's officially 50!
50 years of Black cultural change.
50 years of influencing music, dance, fashion, politics, DJing, knowledge, and graffiti.
50 years of fighting for freedom, fighting against racism, and fighting against white supremacy. Most notably, 50 years of JOY through art and cultural expression.
Happy 50th Anniversary to Hip-Hop. This is a celebration for Black people across the globe. While the rest of the country thought it was just a party on Sedgwick Avenue in the Bronx on August 11th, 1973. It truly was a takeover, a revolution, a manifestation of Black joy in the midst of America's racist madness.
For half a century, Black folks have become griots of our plights by using Hip-Hop as a vehicle of expression of the times. While there are countless moments of pure joy resonating from Black Hip-Hop souls, in the same expressions are the stories of our encounters within our homes, on the streets, and inside our minds. We've found a way to narrate our collective journey.
You might often hear the deeply rooted Black cultural phrase like: “F Tha Police” by N.W.A. The themes of racial inequality, poverty in Black communities, and police violence continue to resonate today. These moments in history have shaped our understanding and fueled our fight for justice and equity.
Moreover, Hip-Hop's artistry has been one of our greatest tools in the ongoing battle against white supremacy. Artists have fearlessly used their craft to challenge oppressive systems, dismantle racial stereotypes, and demand justice for Black lives.
Through Hip-Hop verses, graffiti, and performances, artists have consistently stood on the front lines of social justice and equality, calling for change in a world that often tries to silence our voices.
As we commemorate Hip-Hop's 50th Anniversary, let us celebrate the power of its art in shaping a better future. Together, we honor the past, embrace the present, and pave the way for a future where Black joy, liberation, and freedom reign supreme!
In love and solidarity,
