Mattress and Box Spring Recycling
Mattresses can be dangerous to the environment when they are thrown in landfills. They create flammable air pockets and also can absorb hazardous chemicals that are harmful to the earth. Also, mattresses are not biodegradable and take up a major amount of landfill area.
Mendota Heights residents are invited to recycle old/unwanted mattresses on Saturday, Aug. 19.

Clothing and Shoe Recycling Dropoff
Clothes do not biodegrade while in a landfill. An article of clothing could remain for more than 200 years before decomposing.?While decomposing, clothes emit greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide (CO2) and Methane gas (CH4), a substance that is 28 times higher than CO2 in terms of emissions.
Drop your unused and unwanted shoes and clothes in the bins located at City Hall, any time now through Aug. 18.

Tree of the Month: Hackberry
Hackberry is a large native tree found on floodplains and terraces across southern and central Minnesota. It has been called "one tough tree" due to its adaptability to a wide variety of soil and moisture conditions, as well as other conditions including heat, drought, salt spray, wind, ice and short periods of flooding. This makes it a great tree for tough sites, including boulevards in urban areas, as well as a good option for planting in our changing climate.
