Eyes Turn to November Abortion Vote After Ohioans Vote Down Issue 1

By: Zachary Mettler

Ohio citizens voted down Issue 1 in the state’s Tuesday election, rejecting the legislatively referred ballot measure that would have raised the threshold needed for voters to change the state’s constitution from 50% to 60%.

The disappointing vote paves the way for pro-abortion activists to more easily add abortion as a “right” in the Ohio constitution this November.

With over 95% of results reporting, 57% of Ohio voters voted “No” on the measure, while 43% voted “Yes.”

Turnout for the August election was far higher than anticipated. So far, 3,059,440 votes have been reported, with just over 1.3 million of them having voted “Yes” on Issue 1. Nearly 642,000 Ohioans voted early.

Tuesday’s election results are disappointing and disheartening. Out-of-state, dark money groups spent $15 million to convince Ohio voters to reject Issue 1.

The 1.3 million Ohio voters who voted “Yes” on Issue 1, and all involved pro-life groups, like the Center for Christian Virtue and the Susan B. Anthony List, deserve commendation for their valiant efforts.

Governments Can’t Cure Homelessness — Christians are the Solution

By: Emily Washburn

The New York Times spotlighted the complications and ravages of homelessness in Oregon and California last week in two fitting illustrations of a larger national trend: Governments at all levels have spent billions of dollars to try and compassionately alleviate homelessness, but it’s still on the rise.

Often, the policies that seem most humane and considerate have the worst unintended consequences.

After years of heavy spending, citizens — particularly Christians — should consider what types of government aid are most effective at tackling homelessness, and whether seemingly compassionate policies administered by the wrong people can do more harm than good.

Experts generally agree a combination of mental illness, drug addiction and lack of affordable housing cause homelessness.

Governments across the nation are facing pressure to address these problems at the same time, without violating the rights of homeless people, homeowners and businesses.

It’s a tall order.

Oregon’s government aspired to tackle drug addiction by making personal possession of illegal drugs — including meth and fentanyl — punishable by a $100 dollar fine, which can be waived if the person consents to drug screening and a health evaluation.

Instead of reducing drug use, overdose deaths and emergency room visits in Oregon increased after the law went into effect.

Four Things You Should Know About Michigan’s Ban on Therapy for Unwanted Homosexuality or Transgenderism

By: Jeff Johnston

Michigan became the 22nd state to ban any kind of professional therapy for minors with unwanted homosexuality or transgenderism, with Governor Gretchen Whitmer signing the legislation last week.

The governor, who has a lesbian-identified daughter, said in a press release:

“Today, we are banning the horrific practice of conversion therapy in Michigan and ensuring this is a state where you can be who you are. As a mom of a member of the community and a proud, lifelong ally, I am grateful that we are taking action to make Michigan a more welcoming, inclusive place. Let’s continue working together to ensure anyone can ‘make it’ in Michigan, expand fundamental freedoms, and fight back against any and all forms of discrimination.”

There are several problems with this statement; here are four things you should know about bans on so-called “conversion therapy.”

1. There is no “horrific practice” known as “conversion therapy.”

No counselor or therapist ever put out a sign saying, “I offer conversion therapy” or “I’ll convert you from gay to straight!” There is no such clinical practice.

The term was invented by activists who oppose the truth that some people with same-sex attractions or gender identity confusion don’t want to embrace those thoughts, feelings, identities or behaviors.

Research Findings: Your Smartphone is Not Your Marriage’s Friend

By: Daily Citizen Staff

Marriages today seemingly face more of an uphill battle than ever before. This is unfortunate given all we know about how important marriage is to the well-being of men, women, children and society at large.

An important new research report from scholars at the Institute for Family Studies (IFS) explains how that little ubiquitous device we so often find in our hand distracting us is increasingly an enemy of our marriages. They explain, “Smartphones and social media were supposed to bring us closer together. But the more we learn about their effects, the more we see that these tools come with a price.”

They add, “There is growing evidence that our closest, most important relationships, such as our marriages and dating relationships, are suffering as a result.”

These scholars found that just over a third (37%) of married Americans report their spouse is on the phone or other screen when they would wish they would engage with them personally as a couple. Such feelings certainly do not contribute to marital intimacy and trust. IFS reports the problem is even worse among lower-income couples, where 44% complained their spouse is too often distracted by their phone or online device. For higher-income couples, only 31% expressed this complaint.

Not surprisingly, young couples are most likely to report their smart phones are infringing on their relational closeness. Forty-four percent of spouses under age 35 complain about this compared to 34% of couples in the 35-55 age range.

The New York Times is Suddenly Pro-Life?

By: Paul Batura

When it comes to causes and issues they champion, few media outlets are more enthusiastic about abortion than The New York Times.

In fact, when the High Court overturned Roe back in June of 2022, the publication’s editorial board decried the decision as “an insult to women and the judicial system.”

So, imagine my surprise to see the paper’s Sameer Yasir, a reporter based in New Delhi, India, file a moving essay about Sunil Jaglan, a local father who has committed years of his life to banning prenatal testing.

Why?

Yasir explains:

“In India, the world’s most populous nation, and one which has experienced tremendous economic progress, gender inequality remains deeply entrenched.

In many households, especially in rural areas, girls are considered a social and financial burden whose parents still pay thousands of dollars in dowry gifts to a husband’s family after arranging a marriage.

“Despite an official ban on prenatal sex testing, advertisements for the service were pasted on market walls and highways across Haryana, and aborting fetuses because they were female was common. Although there are some restrictions, legal abortion is widely available in India through the first 20 weeks of pregnancy.”
