Nevada Senate GOP field swells amid
push to oust Jacky Rosen
The Hill | Caroline Vakil & Al Weaver
August 10, 2023
Republicans are bracing for a crowded field in the Nevada Senate race to take on Sen. Jacky Rosen (D-Nev.) as the party looks to win back the majority in the upper chamber next fall.
While Senate Republicans landed their top recruit to take on Rosen - retired Army Capt. Sam Brown - that has not dissuaded several other GOP candidates from throwing their hat in the ring, with two doing so this week" Jeff Gunter, the former U.S. ambassador to Iceland, and retired Air Force Lt. Col. Tony Grady, who lost a primary bid for lieutenant governor in 2022. Former Nevada Secretary of State candidate Jim Marchant launched his campaign in May.
The growing number of candidates is complicating Senate Republicans' efforts to avoid a messy GOP primary that would risk leaving the eventual nominee bruised going into next fall. Read more

Trading places: More lawmakers are

Five state lawmakers traded in their Democratic credentials
for the GOP this session
Politico | Liz Crampton

For Elliott Pritt, defecting to the GOP was an obvious choice.
The West Virginia lawmaker comes from an area of the state that used to be solidly blue - voters sent a Democrat to his seat in the state House for 24 straight years. But attitudes in his district have recently swung towards Republicans, credited largely to the decline of coal and anger over environmental restrictions.
So Pritt abandoned the Democratic Party and registered as a Republican in April. He was motivated by a desire to more effectively represent his constituents and take advantage of the opportunities enjoyed by Republicans who wield supermajority control in the state Legislature.
"Even if I were to run again and win, I would look at another term of never getting another bill passed, never getting anything else done," said Pritt, a social studies teacher. "For the time I'm going to be there I'm not going to sit there and be a lame duck and not get anything."

AP News | Jeff Amy

Two top Republicans in the Georgia state Senate - Lt. Gov. Burt Jones and Sen. Jason Anavitarte of Dallas said in a Monday news conference they will seek to pass such a law in 2024. The proposal could also restrict accounts on other online services.
"It's important that we empower parents," Anavitarte said. "A lot of parents don't know how to restrict content." Read more

America's deepest partisan divides are getting deeper
Axios | Caitlin Owens
August 7, 2023
Brewing battles over redistricting from New York to Utah may result in new congressional maps for at least half a dozen states before the 2024 election, with control of the closely divided U.S. House of Representatives in the balance.
The 2022 election - in which Republicans captured a slim 222-213 majority in the House - took place under maps based on the 2020 U.S. Census and intended to last a decade. But a series of legal challenges including a major U.S. Supreme Court ruling, have cast many of those district lines into doubt. Read more

WG Discussion Points: Voters Just Aren't
Buying Bidenomics
Campaign rhetoric will pit Biden's claims against actual prices
WG Discussion Points | David Winston
August 4, 2023
It's not unusual to see a president inherit a difficult economic challenge not of his own making. Ronald Reagan was handed an economy in free fall. Barack Obama came into office in the middle of a financial crisis.
But to hear President Joe Biden and his team tell it, he was dealt an unusually bad hand back in January 2021 when he took the oath of office - one far worse than his predecessors. Although the COVID-19 economy had already begun to turn around in the last months of the Trump administration, to listen to Biden, the challenges he faced dwarfed those of other administrations.
He couldn't be more wrong. Read more
