"My suffering started with the crisis in Syria, then the economic situation got worse, and the last straw was the earthquake."

This is what Najwa, a survivor of marital abuse, told us after earthquakes devastated her home in Syria.

Najwa

After 20 years of marriage, her husband abandoned her and their four daughters, leaving the family to fend for themselves financially. She couldn’t see how she would be able to survive alone.

The destruction of her home and rippling insecurity from February's catastrophic earthquakes pushed Najwa to the edge. Fear and anxiety took hold as she moved from one overcrowded shelter to the next, with scarce assistance available.

Determined to take care of her daughters, she finally found refuge at a local safe space for women and girls supported by UNFPA — where psychosocial support sessions gave her back a sense of security she felt she’d lost with the disaster.

Safe Space

"In the midst of these difficult events, I see that the women’s support center is the best thing that happened to me," said Najwa. "I told all the women in my neighborhood to join, to benefit from the programmes offered… I’m proud of what I have become!"

As we recognize the 6 month anniversary of the humanitarian disaster in Syria and Türkiye this month, your gifts are still delivering lifesaving care to women and girls rebuilding their lives after the earthquakes.

Please make an emergency gift today to continue delivering care to the women and girls who need it most. We cannot look away from Syria and Türkiye, where needs continue to mount.

MAKE AN EMERGENCY GIFT

From the start of the crisis in Syria with civil warfare more than a decade ago, and in the aftermath of the destructive earthquake, your gifts have helped ensure reproductive health and protection services reach all women and girls in need, wherever they live.

Thanks to support, UNFPA has reached more than 368,000 people in earthquake-affected areas in Syria with reproductive health and protection services through safe spaces, mobile teams, and one-stop centers.

But there is still work to be done to fully support women and girls in Syria and those displaced across the rest of the region.

Make a gift of any amount to deliver lifesaving care to the women and girls who need it most — in Syria and beyond:
