In today’s 24-hour news cycle, we are frequently bombarded with
information, often negative, that can sometimes leave us feeling
overwhelmed or worried about the state of our nation and the issues many
of us care deeply about.

But I firmly believe there is more reason to be optimistic about the
trajectory of our nation and I wanted to share with you some of the recent
victories we should all be proud of. Many of these victories follow weeks
and months of hard work and advocacy by People For members and our allies.
We should all feel a shared sense of accomplishment and optimism that our
collective efforts are firing up progressives across the nation as we
continue fighting back against the far-right extremists that have had a
grip on our politics in recent years.

Ohio Voters Reject Republican Attempts to Weaken Democracy

On Tuesday, Ohio voters overwhelmingly rejected a proposal from Republican
state lawmakers that would have limited the power of voters to make
changes to their state constitution. Issue 1 on the ballot was a blatant
attempt by right-wing lawmakers to make it more difficult to pass a
measure – that will be on the ballot this November – that will ensure
reproductive freedom, including the right to an abortion, is protected by
the state constitution.

Progressive Majority Flips Wisconsin Supreme Court

Last week, Wisconsin State Supreme Court Justice Janet Protasiewicz was
sworn in to begin her 10-year term, flipping the court from a conservative
to progressive majority for the first time in 15 years! People For and our
members fought hard for this victory, which will have major implications
in the coming months with challenges expected to the state’s abortion ban
and the state’s electoral maps (which have unfairly benefited Republicans
in the state for years), and a host of other issues that may come before
the court.

Trump Indicted for his Role in January 6th and for Attempting to Overturn
the 2020 Election

On Thursday August 3rd People For and our allies in the Not Above the Law
coalition held rapid response rallies in Washington, DC and more than 70
other locations across the country, to demonstrate public support for
accountability on the day that Donald Trump was being arrested and
arraigned by the Department of Justice in connection with his efforts to
subvert the 2020 election.

With this DOJ indictment now out, and another indictment pertaining to the
2020 election in Fulton County, GA potentially coming as soon as next
week, People For is preparing for a sustained campaign to continue shaping
public sentiment around these indictments, mobilizing supporters like you
in support of justice, and pushing back against the Far Right’s
authoritarian attempts to undermine our democracy and rule of law.

Tennessee Democrats Win Reelection Four Months After Being Expelled by
State Republicans

The two Tennessee representatives that were expelled from their state
house seats four months ago after they protested in support of gun safety
reform – Justin Jones and Justin Pearson – just won their reelections.
Reps. Jones and Pearson are members of People For’s Young Elected
Officials Network and we were proud to have hosted them in People For’s
offices just a couple months ago and fought alongside them on the ground
in Nashville to have them reinstated to their seats.

“Grandparents For Truth” Rally in Support of Recall Effort for Extremist
School Board Members

On Saturday, August 5th, People For and our Grandparents For Truth
campaign joined local parents in Temecula, CA in launching a recall
campaign to unseat three far-right extremists who have taken over the
school board and, among other things, banned books and the teaching of
“CRT”, eliminated the mention of Harvey Milk in the school curricula, and
fired the very popular superintendent – all straight from the
authoritarian right’s censorship playbook.

At the event, we spoke to an overflow crowd of more than 200 attendees and
signed up a number of attendees to join Grandparents For Truth and will
soon be recruiting volunteers to help with the recall effort.

These incredible wins speak to the power of People For’s campaigns and the
sustained progress we can make as we prepare for the 2023 and 2024
elections.
