John, you’ve just helped us accomplish something extraordinary here in Ohio – with nationwide implications.

On Tuesday, voters turned out in overwhelming numbers to REJECT an extreme, partisan power grab: where Ohio Republicans were trying to rig the ballot initiative process, derail a vote to protect abortion rights next November, and permanently roll back direct democracy in the state.

But with the help of our allies and Common Cause members like you, we made sure every Ohio voter was able to get out and vote – and voters responded by REJECTING Issue 1.

It wasn’t easy – because our opponents scheduled this vote for August in an off-election year – believing their only path to victory was if most Ohioans didn’t turn out. But their plot didn’t work – and this victory continues to prove that when We the People speak, we can win!

For months, working with more than 200 partner organizations, Common Cause Ohio educated and mobilized thousands of voters across the state.

Our No on Issue 1 coalition poured everything we had into this campaign – from the moment the special election date was set to the fantastic final hour of Election Day – and it wouldn’t have been possible without dedicated Common Cause members like you!

But, John, voters in other states have been fighting these same battles -- and we need to make sure we stay ready.

In both South Dakota and Arkansas, extremists tried to pull the same anti-direct democracy scheme to rig our ballot measure system against voters. And as I write you, we are preparing for a similar fight in Arizona, where the GOP wants to make it harder to get initiatives to protect our rights on the ballot.

We went really big on the fight in Ohio because it mattered. And in the coming weeks and months, we’ll be asking for your help to do the same in Arizona, North Dakota, and the 12 other states attempting to make ballot measures more difficult.

Together we can create greater accountability, John, and push for reforms that keep power in the hands of the voters.

Thank you for all you do,

Catherine Turcer, Executive Director
and the Common Cause Ohio Team
