Three- and Ten-Year Bars Immigration Policy Brief - Individuals who remain in the U.S. without authorization are subject to three- and ten-year immigration bars, which prevent them from re-entering the U.S. through a legal channel for up to 10 years. These immigration bars make it impossible for long-term unauthorized immigrants, many of them spouses and parents of U.S. citizens, to “get in line” to receive a valid visa. Since the immigration bars were created, the number of unauthorized immigrants remaining permanently in the U.S. has grown substantially. By revising the immigration bars, including reforming the three- and ten-year bars and providing for more discretion in individual cases, lawmakers could create a method for unauthorized immigrants with deep ties to the U.S. to apply for legal status. This would help to keep American families together and increase those immigrants' economic and fiscal contributions.
Travis County District Judge Declares Protective Abortion Law to Be Unconstitutional in Part; TX AG’s Office Responds Quickly - State District Court Judge Jessica Mangrum issued a temporary injunction order late Friday blocking Texas pro-life laws’ protections for babies facing life-limiting or fatal diagnoses and opening the door to confusion about the clearly-worded exception language to allow abortions when a pregnancy endangers a mother’s life. Responding quickly, the Texas Attorney General’s Office filed a motion in the Texas Supreme Court that effectively blocks the injunction and allows the exception language approved by the Legislature to remain in effect while the court reviews the case. “We applaud the swift action of the Texas Attorney General’s office to defend Texas law, which protects the lives of unborn babies while allowing abortions in rare cases when abortion is necessary to save the pregnant woman’s life,” said Texas Alliance for Life Communications Director Amy O’Donnell.
Rep. Roy and Sen. Cruz fight for Healthcare Freedom - Representative Chip Roy (R-TX-21) and Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) introduced the “Personalized Care Act”, legislation that will put millions of Americans in control of their healthcare choices by expanding Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) – a mechanism that helps individuals create a personalized approach to their care. Representative Roy said, "The American healthcare system is broken, and the American people are taking it on the chin — all while big ‘healthcare’ companies get rich off this crony capitalist racket. The Personalized Care Act would help end run this broken system by circumventing middlemen and bureaucrats and giving patients the direct power to make their own healthcare and coverage decisions, ultimately driving up competition to drive down prices. The quasi-government-controlled healthcare cartel we have isn't working; it's time for Healthcare Freedom."
Rep. Chip Roy and Sen. Mike Lee Fight to Reform Higher Education - Representative Chip Roy (R-TX-21) and Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) recently introduced the Higher Education Reform Opportunity (HERO) Act to reform the federal government's involvement in higher education and student loans. The HERO Act will free up states to establish their own accreditation systems and cap the amount of money the federal government can loan. These reforms would lower the cost of higher education and lead to greater innovation as colleges and universities return to focusing on serving students.
