John,
There was a huge election in Ohio on Tuesday — and the result is great news for several reasons.
Ohio voters have been working to enshrine the right to abortion in the state constitution ever since Roe v. Wade was overturned. Earlier this year, community groups submitted 700,000 petition signatures to trigger a statewide election on abortion rights — only to see wealthy Republicans try to change the rules.
On Tuesday, Ohio voters said loud and clear — don’t mess with our right to petition!
We are thrilled with this result. It shows that voters in GOP-led states like Ohio support the right to abortion — and that they treasure the power of direct democracy.
John, Ohio Republicans tried to undermine the petition process by proposing a 60% threshold for statewide ballot measures to pass. They spent tens of millions of dollars and set a rare August special election date to suppress voter turnout, and still didn’t succeed. 57% of Ohio voters showed up to protect abortion rights and the right to petition!
We are inspired by the Ohio organizing and are redoubling our efforts here in Texas. Ground Game knows that voters are motivated by progressive issues, and that petition campaigns are a key strategy to increase voter turnout. Help us prepare for a powerful 2024 by making your contribution today.
Working for change,
