An important update from Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington

John,

Roger Stone was sentenced to 40 months in federal prison yesterday for lying to Congress and witness tampering, after both the career prosecutors and the judge in the case did their jobs and ensured justice was served. That’s despite the alarming intervention of President Trump and Attorney General Barr, who overruled the initial sentencing recommendation, saying it was too harsh, which led to the withdrawal of all four prosecutors on the case.

Trump long ago gave up any pretense of respect for the law, but these last few weeks have reaffirmed that the Attorney General has as well. Barr’s actions ahead of Stone’s sentencing should concern every single one of us. The DOJ’s interference with the initial sentencing recommendation was anti-democratic and scary. For more about why Barr’s actions are so dangerous for our democracy, read my op-ed in the New York Times.

Interfering in Roger Stone’s sentencing is far from the first time Barr’s behavior has raised red flags. Last spring, when Barr was misleading the public about the contents of the Mueller report and acting more like the president’s personal attorney than the country’s chief law enforcement officer, CREW launched a petition calling for his resignation.

In light of Barr’s dangerous attacks on the integrity of the justice system, we renewed our call for his resignation, with even more urgency. Nearly 90,000 of you have now signed and demanded Barr’s resignation, helping build public pressure for him to leave office.

If you haven’t signed yet, you can sign here—and if you’ve already added your name, you can help us reach 100,000 signers by sharing via Facebook, Twitter, or email.

The tens of thousands of people who have called for Barr’s resignation demonstrate clearly that Americans will not stand for an attorney general with such disregard for our justice system.

Thank you for speaking out and fighting for our democracy,

Noah Bookbinder
