Virginia recently became the 38th and last state needed to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) -- the proposed constitutional amendment that would guarantee equal rights for women. I am so proud of my state and grateful to my friends in the Virginia General Assembly who helped make this happen!
However, when the ERA was first approved by Congress in 1972, a 10 year deadline was applied to getting the amendment ratified by a ¾ majority of states (38 states). So, right now, Virginia's historic ratification of the ERA is on hold and that is unacceptable. Last week, the House passed legislation to lift the cap and make the Equal Rights Amendment part of the Constitution. But Mitch McConnell won't allow a vote in the Senate.

I promise, I won't settle for partial progress, and neither should you -- we must take the last step and make the ERA part of the Constitution. That's why, I am proud to announce that I took action, along with my colleagues in the House, and successfully voted to remove the ERA deadline!
The state legislatures (especially Virginia!) and the House have done their part. Now, there's just one obstacle left in approving the ERA: Getting the Senate to follow the House in removing the deadline.
We know Mitch McConnell and his Republican allies in the Senate won't listen to the demands of the American people unless we stand together and speak up. That's why I'm asking you to join me in urging the Senate to remove the ERA deadline so we can finally enshrine this necessary amendment in the U.S. Constitution. → [link removed]
