This five-part series, the product of a year of field research and interviews, reveals how illegal gold and timber have become the currency of organized crime in these regions, competing with drug trafficking that invades forests and rivers alike.

Gold fever and illegal logging are a few of the environmental crimes plaguing Indigenous communities and sowing the seeds of future destruction in the Amazon. The Amazon Presidential Summit, which began on August 8 in Brazil, emphasizes the importance of joining efforts to protect these communities and combat environmental crimes in the region.
