I’ve talked before about how the mid-year campaign finance reporting deadline was our chance to show the world what our campaign is made of—good, bad, or otherwise. But as much as that’s true for our campaign, it’s also true for everyone else running for office in North Carolina.
Like our likely GOP opponent, John Bradford, who we now know (just like I’ve said would happen) boosted up his campaign’s fundraising numbers by loaning himself $250,000 of his own money, at zero interest. |
It must be nice to have a quarter of a million dollars just laying around like that. |
The way that politicians raise money tells you a lot of what you need to know about the people they’ll be accountable to—and with his fundraising report, Rep. Bradford is telling us that as Treasurer he’d mostly be accountable to his own financial interests. Outside of this loan, he only raised about $65,000 from ordinary donors. If you’re someone who’s interested in government that works for the people instead of special interests, that’s not a good ratio. But here’s the thing: when it comes to making TV ad buys or printing literature or paying staff, dollars are dollars. Bradford’s loan doesn’t change the fact that he’s building a warchest to win this race, and we’ll need the funds to match him. Before we know it, he and the GOP will be lobbing attacks and misinformation at us, and we have to be ready.
The good news is, we have the grassroots behind our movement. We raised $183,000 on this past report, and it all came from donors just like you. But we have to keep up that momentum if we’re going to win next November. We have to keep up that momentum if we’re going to transform our state government and build a Treasurer’s office that invests in our people, uplifts our neighbors, and helps every North Carolinian find the opportunity they need to reach their full potential. I know I ask for contributions a lot—almost every time I email you—but that’s why I’m asking you to step up again and support this campaign. Every contribution helps us get our message out there and reach voters, so can I count you in today? |

Your support means the world to me, because it means this campaign is bigger than one person—it’s a movement for all of us, and together, I know we can make the difference. |

Wesley Harris is a North Carolina native and the only PhD economist in the General Assembly. First elected in 2018, he has been fighting hard for the residents of southern Mecklenburg County and working to make our state the best place in the country to live, work, and start a family. Now, Wesley is running for Treasurer to return common sense to our state government and build opportunity for every North Carolinian.
