Hi Friend,
Something amazing happened yesterday in Ohio. A record number of people turned out to defend democracy.
Issue 1 – the constitutional amendment up for a vote in Ohio’s August 8th special election – would have increased the necessary threshold for future amendments to be approved by voters from a simple majority to a 60% supermajority. Most notably, the fate of Issue 1 would impact the amendment protecting abortion access coming up in November.
At a time when young people are voting more than ever, politicians are making every attempt to prevent their votes from being counted and their voices from being heard. But Ohioans defended democracy and voted no.
Our executive director, Kimberly Inez McGuire, told press about how the defeat of the Ohio ballot initiative is a crucial step toward protecting access to abortion in the state. Yesterday's win at the ballot box in Ohio is a win for us all, and in November, we will again by securing abortion access.
Like last year’s win in Kansas showed us that reproductive justice is a winning issue. Ohio’s win is further proof. Our movement is young people powered and we’re going to carry this energy through to 2024!
In solidarity,
