I hope you’ll give me a minute to explain why I’m introducing the Protecting Our Democracy Act — especially now.

Over the last several years, our democracy has been put to the test over and over again. From the multiple efforts to overturn the 2020 election to their culmination in the assault on our nation’s Capitol on January 6th, many of our democratic norms and institutions have been battered — literally.

These recent actions have shown that we cannot take our democracy for granted.

The Protecting Our Democracy Act is an ambitious set of reforms that would help ensure another wannabe demagogue like Donald Trump cannot push our democracy to the brink again.

This legislation will help us do three important things:

1. Stop the abuse of the president’s powers.
2. Restore checks and balances.
3. Protect our elections from interference, foreign and domestic.

This isn’t a Democratic or Republican issue. This is a nonpartisan, pro-democracy effort — designed to strengthen our democracy for future generations.

After the Watergate scandal, Congress took action to pass a series of landmark reforms to prevent future presidents from abusing their office in the way Richard Nixon did. It’s high time we do the same.

Those changes stood the test of time for half a century. Now, it is time for Congress to act again and pass new protections for our democratic institutions.
