It’s National Book Lovers Day! This special day serves as a reminder of the incredible influence that books have on fostering imagination, learning, empathy, and wisdom.
But as we celebrate the magic of books and the power of storytelling, others are working hard to ban books , threatening intellectual freedom, diversity of thought, and our progress as a society. This year’s local elections are our firewall against efforts to ban books in Connecticut.

Attempted book bans in 2022 nearly doubled from 2021, hitting a 20-year record, according to the American Library Association. A total of 2,571 book titles were targeted for censorship —a vast majority of them were written by or about members of the LGBTQ community and people of color.
It’s a fight we’re experiencing right here in Connecticut, too. A book banning was narrowly averted in Newtown earlier this year, and over 40 incidents have been documented since 2020. But Democrats are fighting back.
