Friend,
As a Michigander, I never say this, but Ohio made me proud last night. Yesterday, Ohio voters turned out in droves to reject a proposal that would make it harder to amend the state constitution by requiring a 60% threshold to pass ballot initiatives.
This proposal was not only an effort to undermine democracy, but a direct attack on abortion rights. This November, Ohioans will have the opportunity to vote to enshrine abortion rights into their state constitution. Issue 1 was an effort by Ohio’s Republican leadership to make it harder to do so because they want to enact radical abortion legislation — including a six week abortion ban, before most women even know they’re pregnant.
Victory in Ohio last night continues a trend of Midwestern states rejecting extremist attempts to restrict abortion rights. First, Kansas last August. Then, our great state of Michigan last November, where we codified Roe. Looking forward, Pennsylvania, Iowa, Missouri, and Florida will have or are working to have statewide ballot questions on abortion.
I am not surprised by Midwestern voters' overwhelming support of abortion rights – even in more traditionally red states. We are pragmatic people, who continue to show National Republicans in Washington that voters in the Midwest and across the country have rejected Republicans’ abortion attacks at the ballot box. But Republicans have made it clear at every level that overturning a federal right to abortion was just the beginning, and they will continue to fight to outlaw abortion across the country with statewide bans and ultimately a federal ban — superseding all state laws on the books.
So as important a moment this is for Ohio, we need more than just state efforts to protect the right to abortion. We need principled, elected leaders at every level of government who will fight to protect these critical rights and codify Roe into federal law. This means having a plan, and it means changing the filibuster as we know it and allowing these protections to get an up-or-down vote in the Senate.
If you agree, I hope you join me in my campaign for Senate by chipping in today.
