John- There is a dangerous, new phenomenon that is sweeping across America and it’s threatening the health and safety of our children. The phenomenon is a radical ideology that seeks to encourage and even facilitate sex changes for kids. This phenomenon has crept into our schools, the mainstream media, and even prominent medical institutions like our children’s hospitals. I won’t stand for this, which is why I am working in Congress to fight back. I’ve introduced legislation to stop taxpayer funding for programs at children’s hospitals if they engage in this pseudoscience. My legislation is simple – it says that if children’s hospitals remain focused on evidence-based, quality medicine then they will continue to receive funding. If children’s hospitals choose instead to bow to the far-left and engage in so-called “gender affirming care” on children, then taxpayers shouldn’t be forced to fund programs that support these medical institutions. That’s not controversial, it’s common sense. What is controversial is this idea that it is “compassionate” to chemically castrate young boys or perform double mastectomies on young girls. In fact, there is ZERO QUALITY EVIDENCE of ANY long-term benefits of transgender surgery, puberty blockers, or hormone therapy for children. Moreover, many of our peer countries in Europe have taken steps to rein in these dangerous practices. They recognize that irreversibly changing a child’s physiology without any quality scientific data that point to the benefits is ridiculous. We must recognize that too. When, according to recent polls, 70% of Americans oppose puberty blockers for minors - to say nothing of sex change surgery - we should not be sending taxpayer dollars to medical institutions that are marching our children down a path from which they cannot return. I have faced serious opposition to my legislative work on this issue from the far-left and their allies in the media, but I’m not backing down. I know that I am standing for what’s right and standing up for our kids.
