Friend –

Last night, in a critical special election, Ohio voters struck down an extreme and unpopular measure that would have taken away majority rule and raised the threshold for passing citizen-initiated constitutional amendments from 50% to 60%.

Make no mistake: Politicians admitted this measure was placed on the ballot primarily to make it harder for Ohioans to protect their abortion rights come November. But Buckeye voters saw Issue 1 exactly for what it was – an attempt to deny us our voice, even when it comes to our most personal decisions.

ACLU Supporter, this critical victory was powered by the hundreds of thousands Ohioans who have been showing up for democracy and reproductive freedom – volunteering with Ohioans for Reproductive Freedom, talking to their neighbors, and signing our ballot petition to protect abortion rights.

We at the ACLU are incredibly proud to have partnered in these immensely important efforts along with Ohioans for Reproductive Freedoms, the ACLU of Ohio, and our coalition allies on the ground – and we will continue to fight to ensure the voices of voters are heard and our reproductive freedom is protected in November.

Ohioans can now turn their focus to rejecting extremism to ensure people have the freedom to make decisions that are best for them.

This single moment in Ohio extends far beyond the state. Across the nation, communities are galvanizing in support of abortion rights and showing politicians that we, the people, will not allow our reproductive freedom to be chipped away.

We're with you in this fight and will keep you updated as we push forward in the courts, at the statehouses, and on the ballots like this one. We can and will win this, ACLU Supporter – together.

Onward,
