Self Care: Have Your New Year's Resolutions Gone Off Track?
For busy families, the start of the new year may feel like a very long time ago. You may have made some very sound New Year’s resolutions that are already a bit off track. There is still time to refuel those resolutions with enthusiasm and intention, not guilt. If you can identify what drives you, makes you smile unexpectedly, or gets you in the “zone”, you’ll find your passion. That is a great place to begin when you are considering making some changes in your life. This article offers a simple, seven-step guide to help you create new habits and achieve your goals.

Special Education: Definition, Statistics and Trends
In the US today, nearly 14% of all students aged 3-21 years are receiving some special education services. Special education includes programs that serve students with physical, emotional, cognitive and behavioral disabilities. The major law governing special education is the federal Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, which guarantees a “free appropriate public education” to children with disabilities. It also required that they be educated with other students in the “least restrictive environment.” The landscape has changed over time and the field continues to evolve. This article offers great information and perspective for families.

What Can Parents Do About Bullying?
When parents send their children out into the world, they hope they have wonderful experiences and meet caring people. Unfortunately, that isn’t always the case. Many of us have been upset when we find that our children are involved in bullying—either as the perpetrator or on the receiving end. Parents can have significant influence over how children handle these experiences and should intervene when necessary. To maximize the chance they will avoid bullying situations in the first place, we can nurture children’s emotional and interpersonal skills, and support their positive peer relationships. If bullying does happen, we can stand up for their protection and insist on swift action on the part of the responsible adults.

2020 Maryland Census: Be Counted!
The United States is required to perform a national count of all people living in each state every ten years. The census is important - it determines representation in Congress and impacts local legislative districts, and it is the basis for funding critical programs and services. Every Marylander not counted in the census costs the state approximately $18,250 over ten years. The census is easy – it can be done by mail, by phone and online. All information submitted must be kept confidential, including a resident’s citizenship, income and other sensitive personal data. Don’t miss this opportunity to be counted!
