Dear John,
We are in a pivotal moment in our fight for a just, multi-racial democracy. We are seeing an attack on the very idea of free public education itself, manifesting in the forms of racist book bans, and controlled curriculums that root out Black history and African American studies. Access to public education is a foundational element of our nation and we must protect it.
Extremists and authoritarians have always tried to restrict educational freedom, to stop our country from moving towards an inclusive and equitable society, one where everyone is valued and has the chance to prosper. The attacks on public education today are a continuation of the backlash against the Civil Rights Movement, and our job is to see that its gains are not undone.
In schools across the country, students learn concepts and principles that underpin our democracy, because ensuring a well-informed society is an essential part of our public education system. As Dr. Ford says in the above video “What people learn will ultimately set up their frame for understanding both history and the nation.”
A true understanding of our history sets up the next generation to challenge the living legacies of systemic racism and oppression. HEAL Together was formed to support those who believe in this commitment to our nation’s youth. We're providing tools and resources for people to advocate for the honest, accurate and fully funded public schools our children deserve—schools that reflect the best of who we are and who we can be. It’s more than just a movement, and your participation is paramount.
Actions you can take right now
- Give a monetary donation that’s meaningful to you - every dollar makes a difference, and recurring gifts provide reliable resources for our work

- Share our Toolkit with your community of parents, students, educators, friends, and neighbors
Your support is needed and important. Those committed to building a more inclusive nation cannot be silent about attacks on education nor can they ignore efforts to rewrite U.S. history or target teachers and kids.
