This weekend I joined Service Employees International Union (SEIU) members
to listen and learn about the challenges facing care workers. The union
leaders I met with at both a health center and an in-home child care
facility represent folks in a variety of careers in schools and
healthcare—from medical assistants, to bus drivers, to cafeteria workers.

As a single parent, I couldn’t do my job without the many people who keep
my kids’ public schools running. These workers are essential partners to
parents and, like all workers, deserve to be compensated fairly for their
work.
Here in California and across the country, we’ve seen a summer full of
strikes in all sorts of industries.
Unions and government oversight go hand in hand. It’s one thing to pass
laws that are supposed to help people, but too many politicians show up at
the press conference and then disappear. That’s not good enough. I’ll
always do the work of overseeing our laws, making sure they’re working as
intended and corporations are actually following the law. Unionized
workers are often the folks on the ground holding these big companies
accountable, and as a Senator I’d be in close contact with labor so we can
hold bad actors accountable together.

Many thanks to the SEIU members who took the time to meet with me!
