Hello,
Some of my biggest idols are writers like Zora Neale Hurston, Alice Walker, and J. California Cooper. I adored reading their books and plays as a teenager because these Black women helped me shape my own identity.
It’s awful to think that one day, my granddaughter could walk into a library and not find their works – all because extremists are threatened by books that don’t align with their far-right agenda.
Let’s be clear, Black literature, as well as LGBTQ+ literature, is being silenced in a way we haven’t seen in this country in decades.
It would be detrimental to children for generations to come if they aren’t able to read impactful literature just because it doesn’t fit a politician’s agenda. Children, and all Americans, deserve to learn and read as they please. I hope you’ll agree with me on that.
