Today in Arizona, President Biden designated Baaj Nwaavjo I’tah Kukveni — Ancestral Footprints of the Grand Canyon as the latest U.S. national monument.
President Biden’s designation will conserve nearly a million acres of public land surrounding the Grand Canyon — lands that are under threat by uranium mining and other destructive industries.
This is huge news, Friend. Local Indigenous communities and environmentalists have fought for years to protect the cultural heritage and ecology of the Grand Canyon region. Today’s designation will ensure that these historical resources are preserved for generations to come.
This victory could not have happened without the support of activists like you. With your help, LCV holds elected leaders accountable — including when they take positive action to protect people and the planet. It ensures leaders know we’re watching, and that we expect them to continue to secure more climate and environmental justice progress in the future.
This is a big win — but there’s still more work to be done to reach the climate science-backed goal of conserving 30 percent of America’s lands and waters by 2030.
Please take a moment to thank President Biden for today’s monument designation and ask that he continue to protect public lands and waters. It only takes a moment to add your name and help reach our goal of 5,000 signatures.
This new monument will help preserve the stories, histories, and sacred sites of the Havasupai, Hualapai, Hopi, and Navajo people. It will also help protect a vital source of clean drinking water in the Southwest and create incredible outdoor recreation opportunities.
Since President Biden took office, our movement has delivered thousands of letters calling for him to protect public lands. Your grassroots actions led to this incredible victory, as well as other recent monument designations, including Nevada’s Avi Kwa Ame, Colorado’s Camp Hale, and Texas’s Castner Range.
Permanently protecting these landscapes is an important victory for the environmental movement, as well as the coalitions of Tribal Nations, local communities, and outdoor enthusiasts who all pushed for these national monuments. Each monument designation helps bring us closer to our nation’s conservation and climate goals.
We have to keep the momentum going, Friend. Make your voice heard today: thank President Biden for protecting the Grand Canyon region and ask that he continue to protect public lands.
LCV is proud to have you in our corner on days like these. Thank you for all that you do to protect people and the planet.
Onward,
LCV Conservation Team
