Dear John, When Democrats controlled the House of Delegates, State Senate and Governor’s Office, I joined my colleagues in passing laws to expand background checks, close the gun show loophole, allow localities to prohibit open carry in public places and grant judges the ability to remove a firearm from someone who is a risk to himself or others.
With this trifecta, I successfully spearheaded legislation to remove firearms from those convicted of assault of a household member, helping to stop the escalation of violence. But this past session I offered legislation to ensure that offenders under my newly enacted law turned over their firearms. This was a common-sense measure to ensure that the law was followed. No Republican voted for this measure. This speaks volumes.
Now it is your turn to speak up. Let your voice be heard by making a donation to help senate candidates in swing districts. Any contribution you make will be donated to Gun Sense Candidates.
The role of guns in domestic violence cannot be overstated. The presence of a gun in a domestic violence situation makes it five times more likely that a woman will be killed. The National Domestic Violence Hotline reported a 99% increase in calls from people saying their partners are trying to control their reproductive choices through gun violence since Roe was overturned.
Recent court rulings have made this crisis even more dire. Last February, the judges of the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals made an extreme ruling in the case United States v. Rahimi. They said the federal law prohibiting people subject to domestic violence restraining orders from having guns was unconstitutional under the Second Amendment. The United States Supreme Court is the last place for an appeal of this ruling, not a comforting thought.
If ever there was a case that elections matter, I submit that protecting our families from abuse and making our homes safe is as basic as you get. Please help support senate candidates who understand that safety and peace begin at home. Any donation you make is appreciated.
To win our targeted races, we must continue to help our candidates hire field staff and communicate with voters. We expect the targeted races to be very close.
Thank you, in advance, for your help.
