Savings From Removing Lead Service Lines in Michigan

The 2018 Michigan Lead and Copper Rule established that all
lead-containing water service lines would be replaced by 2041.

Corwin Rhyan and his team of coauthors conducted a cost-benefit analysis
of this policy

for the August issue of Health Affairs.

Using new inventory data, Rhyan and coauthors estimate that replacing
more than 400,000 lead service lines would reduce lead exposure for more
than 400,000 newborns and generate $3.24 billion in future benefits, or
a net savings of $1.91 billion.

Rhyan and coauthors predict that non-White and low-income newborn
children in Michigan would especially benefit from lead water service
line removal.
