Now that Trump is facing his third set of criminal charges — this time for trying to steal the 2020 election — his team is trying hard to spin this news.

On Sunday, one of his lawyers told Chuck Todd that a “technical violation of the Constitution” isn’t necessarily a crime. (That’s one heck of a legal defense!) But their main argument is that the 78 criminal charges he’s facing are all a partisan effort by President Biden to stop his 2024 opponent.

That idea is absurd. For one, Trump has been indicted for three separate sets of crimes by three separate grand juries. Most of the witnesses testifying are Republicans, several of whom are his political allies. (And that’s not to mention the small detail that the whole country witnessed Trump’s efforts to overturn the election in real time !)

Look, Trump’s people can say whatever they want. What actually is terrifying is that Americans seem to be buying it. A new CBS News poll shows that nearly 60% of Americans (and two-thirds of independents) believe these new charges are part of an effort to keep Trump from winning back the White House.

That means we have our work cut out for us. Voters need to know the truth about what Trump did, why it’s so serious, and why the rule of law must prevail — regardless of his status as a candidate .

Most importantly, we must win the debate about whether the man who tried to break democracy deserves another chance at power. Will you chip in to help build the operation to stop Trump from lying his way back into the White House? [[link removed]]
