Textbooks and state standards fail to provide comprehensive coverage

friend,

We already know that textbooks and state standards fail to provide
comprehensive coverage of American slavery, the modern civil rights
movement and other histories involving oppression and resistance.
Without accurate context for history, young people are increasingly
vulnerable to white nationalist rhetoric and recruiting tactics.

A growing tide of anti-student inclusion groups are backing
legislation that bans books about people of color and the LGBTQ+
community, attacks the inclusion of honest history in school
curriculums and targets members of the LGBTQ+ community. These laws
censor narratives that may contradict white supremacy and erode
diverse students' right to a fair education. In Georgia, a
teacher has already been fired

for reading a best-selling children's book about
self-acceptance and diversity to her fifth-grade students.

Public schools are on the brink of a censorship crisis. However,
dedicated teachers in the Deep South and beyond are resisting. The
SPLC's Learning for Justice project provides learning materials
including lesson plans, guides, films, webinars and more to educators
and parents, all free of charge.
